Energy and Our Garden

Our bodies are our gardens, to which our wills are our gardeners.

— William Shakespeare —

Reflection

We are less than three weeks from Thanksgiving, phase one of the four phases of the holiday season. The other three phases (for me) include Christmas, New Year’s, and Super Bowl Sunday.

There was a time when I set a pre-holiday goal of not gaining any more than ten pounds while sludging through these three months marked by gluttonous rituals.

I’ve changed.

During my life journey, I realized that having energy and being on top of my game during the holiday season was more critical than devouring every food deemed attractive to me by my senses.

Facts

We need energy to enjoy the holiday season.

We need food to provide that energy.

Too much food, especially junk food, suffocates our body…my previous state during all four phases of the holiday season.

Or, in Shakespearian terms–too much food and weeds (junk food) in our garden will suffocate the contents of our garden.

Shakespeare also notes that our will is our gardener. Said differently, what we do with our bodies is a choice.

Solutions

If you struggle with gluttonous tendencies, try turning them over to God on a routine basis and create a plan for how you will nutritiously navigate through the holiday period and beyond.

There are lots of people who will have little to no food to enjoy during this holiday season. So what if we took half of the food we would normally eat over the next three months and gave it to those with food insecurities?

From an energy standpoint, that would be a “win-win.”

God likes “win-win’s.”

He also likes for us to take good care of our gardens.

1 Corinthians 3:7, “So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth.”
