Reflection
I’ll never forget the moment I finally set aside my ego and asked for help.
I went to my brother, a psychologist, hoping he could help me understand why I needed drugs and alcohol to handle life. I’d already seen another psychologist, but he didn’t tell me what I wanted to hear. He said I needed treatment for addiction. I insisted I needed him to fix my mental state so I could handle life on life’s terms without drugs or alcohol…WRONG!
When I finally told my brother what was going on, he turned pale from the shock. Then he said something that changed my life: “I can’t help you, but I’ll find someone who can.”
That someone was Rusty, a former village “burnout” and now a recovering drug addict and alcoholic who would play a major role in saving my life.

For many of us, “I need help” is among the hardest words to say.
Pride and ego tell us we should handle things ourselves.
Fear tells us people will think less of us.
Recovery teaches the opposite.
Asking for help is an act of courage and self-awareness.
God designed us for interdependence, not independence.
There will be times when your strength isn’t enough, and that’s okay. Someone else may have exactly the experience, perspective, or encouragement you need. The key is being humble enough to make the call.
That call to the former village “burnout” in the summer of 1987 transformed my life in ways I could never have imagined.
As I noted in yesterday’s writing, God often works through His people, and sometimes through people we never would have imagined.
AND…
God works far beyond our imagination if we let Him in… I always write from experience.
