Grit and Bear It – Day 18 – Show Up

Showing up is 80% of life.

— Woody Allen —

Reflection:

Like most families, ours has a few stories that live on—told and retold around dinner tables and holiday gatherings.

One of my favorites was sparked recently by a Woody Allen quote: “Eighty percent of life is showing up.” It took me back to the time when our oldest, Jason, then about 10 or 11, signed up for a local free-throw shooting basketball contest.

He was a solid shooter, usually sinking 15 to 20 out of 25. But on the day of the competition, he was the only kid who showed up in his age group. Still, the rules required him to shoot all 25.

Maybe it was the silence in the gym, maybe it was nerves—but he only made two shots.

He was crushed, embarrassed. But I put my arm around him and said, “You won. You’re going to the districts. You showed up—that’s what matters.”

A week later, at districts, with a few dozen more eyes on him, Jason calmly drained 22 out of 25 and advanced to regionals. That moment etched itself into our family lore—not just because he bounced back, but because it reminded us all: showing up matters. Sometimes it’s the whole battle.

Fact:

Grit isn’t loud—it’s consistent. When life gets tough, the courageous thing is often just showing up again and again.

Soul Search:

What situation requires you to simply show up with faith today?

“Let your steadfast love, O Lord, be upon us, even as we hope in you.” – Psalm 33:22
