Focus is paramount in achieving our dreams and goals and our focus becomes blurred and distracted when we focus on things we have no control over. The former UCLA basketball coach John Wooden, who is undoubtedly the greatest college basketball coach of all time, often told others that he very seldom spent time worrying about what the opponent was going to do because it took his focus away from what he could control. He was much more concerned about his team’s execution than the opponent’s.
I’ve watched many people and organizations over the years settle for mediocrity simply because they become focused on the wrong things. How many people do you know who are constantly worrying about what other people think? Can you say people pleasers and/or fear? I also know of organizations who worry more about their competition than they do about their own organization. Can you say fear? An unfocused life run by fear is a life run by satan. It is important to learn how to stay focused on things that are important and things you can control.
I’ve suffered from ADHD since I was a child and over the years I had to develop tools to keep me focused. I developed my P.E.A.C.E. acronym tool about 15 years ago and I believe I’ve found the best tool that works for me. When I have a Plan, and put forth consistent Effort, coupled with a solid Attitude, while seeking support and giving support to the Community around me and taking care of my body so I have Energy, I find my focus to be pretty sharp.
Although all components of P.E.A.C.E. help sharpen my focus I have found it imperative to fuel these components with the Holy Spirit on a daily basis. In essence I turn my focus over to God and it amazes me how I am filled with peace. This peace in turn allows me to focus on the important things, which are the things I can control.
Colossians 3:15&17 “Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts…And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” Notice the word all…and all means all…another topic for another day.
