“Wired” to be a Blessing

Proverbs 19:17 “If you help the poor, you are lending to the Lord and he will repay you.”

There are hundreds of verses in the Bible pertaining to loving our neighbor and helping others. The Lord not only tells us to love and help others but he “wired” us to be a blessing to others, otherwise we would all feel bad when we helped others. Does this make sense? Think about this…have you ever had a “guilty conscience” when you’ve helped someone in need? I’ve never heard anyone who goes on mission trips, serves at soup kitchens, or gives clothing to the poor say they felt bad after doing it. I always hear them say how fulfilling it is to help others.

In the recovery community our mental health is often dependent upon our willingness to get out of ourselves and help another person. All addictions as well as most forms of mild to moderate depression are selfish disorders born out of fear from something that has happened in our past.

When we are active in our disease we very seldom take the time to get out of ourselves and eventually the behavior insidiously becomes a habit and turns into a self-perpetuating cycle of self focus and self pity and we find ourselves becoming more of a burden than a blessing…been there done that.

Most of you know I have a developmentally disabled son and every morning when he gets on the bus all of his comrades are upbeat, excited, saying hi, laughing, giggling…giving me my morning blessing of unconditional love…believe me we are wired to give! My son and his buddies have not been warped by the world’s “self-focused” point of view. Everytime I put him on the bus I am given a great gift by a bunch of people simply being the way God made them to be, they do not have a choice to be otherwise.

God does not lie and what he says through Solomon in the Proverb above is very true. When you help the poor, you are helping the Lord and even though true giving is performed without the need for repayment or reward, God repays us and often it comes back ten-fold.

In Luke 6:38, Jesus says; “Give and you will receive. Your gift will return to you in full–pressed down, shaken together to make room for more, running over and poured into your lap. The amount you give will determine the amount you get back.”

As we come upon Thanksgiving, take some time to not only count your blessings but pass those blessings on to those who are in need, afterall you are helping the Lord and doing what he wired you to do.
