Priorities & Setbacks

The true meaning of life is to plant trees, under whose shade you do not expect to sit.

— Nelson Henderson —

During the Great Depression a young boy recalls going with his father on more than one occasion to visit a local banker in his hometown of Piqua, Ohio.

The boy remembers sitting in a room by himself while peering through the window into the banker’s office as his father listened intently to the banker and took notes.

Then suddenly the meetings stopped and the young boy’s family lost their home.  Losing a home was an all too common occurence during the Great Depression and this occurence made a lasting impact on this young man.

The young boy in this story was my dad, the grandson of Frederick Meyer, an immigrant from Germany who came through Ellis Island in 1892.  Great Grandpa Frederick was most likely looking for a better way for himself and his future family.

I will continue this story tomorrow…

imageWe are in the “priorities phase” of building our life playing field.

Priorities, like our guiding principles and strengths, are key elements that create boundaries for our life playing field.

I have found it is easy to name our priorities, but living them is sometimes another story.

What are your priorities?  Stated differently, what are your most important roles and/or responsibilities at this point in your life?

List them in order of importance.

Are you investing adequate time in each of these roles?

My priorities are as follows and align with my roles and responsibilities:

  1. Spiritual, Mental and Physical Being
  2. Husband
  3. Dad
  4. Son
  5. Brother
  6. Family
  7. Leader
  8. Friend
