“Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind, don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind.” ~Dr. Seuss
I believe another way the devil tries to distract us is by giving us an unhealthy desire to live up to others’ expectations or to have expectations of others which cannot be met.
If the silly devil can distract us from what is most important from an expectations standpoint then once again he is winning.
If you are trying your best to be a man or woman of faith then the most important expectation(s) would be the expectations God has of us.
Although his grace is free and only requires faith to receive it, all throughout scripture God refers to the most important command and that is to love Him and to love our neighbors as ourselves.
Let’s call these God’s Expectations of us.
The second most important expectation(s) would be what we should expect from ourselves.
I wrote about Miguel Ruiz and his book “The Four Agreements” a couple of weeks ago. Personally I think these four agreements are the key expectations we should strive to have of our ourselves:
*Never assume
*Never take things personally
*Be impeccable with your word
*Always give your best.
Let’s call these Our Expectations of ourselves.
So if you strive to always love God and your fellow man and you never assume, never take things personally, speak with honesty and always give your best then I believe you have no time or reason to worry about what others are thinking or to worry about what others are doing.
Make sense?
One of the reasons I am so passionate about helping others’ realize and live their life purpose is it creates a focus on things that really do matter and blinds us to those things that don’t.
