Strawberries, Kindness, and Remembrance

Be good to people. You will be remembered more for your kindness than any level of success you could ever attain.

The other day Lori shared with me a typical Lori story.

She was at a local farm produce market and as she was walking out with some fresh corn on the cob a lady saw her and said, “I’ll never forget the time we were at Fulton’s (another local farm produce market) and you were walking out the door with two containers of strawberries. What you didn’t know was those were the last strawberries available for sale that day. You must have heard the disappointment in my voice when the clerk informed me and you turned around and handed me one of your containers and told me to take it for free. I will never forget that kind gesture you made that day.”

This is so typical of my wife. She had done this good deed years ago and never told a soul.

It’s no coincidence that Lori shared that story with me because a blog was percolating in my head during my bike ride that day.

The premise of the blog – “How do you want to be remembered?”

Earlier in the day, I had unplugged from social media, most likely forever, because I was tired of all the negativity and noise it was creating in my head.

I remember during my bike ride thinking, “On the day we stand in judgment will Jesus say ‘Great post on Facebook on July 22, 2020, when you denounced all people who didn’t agree with your views on politics, race, and the handling of the COVID-19 pandemic.”

Jesus – forgive me for my cynicism. 🙂

Maybe it’s because I’m growing closer to my judgment day but how I will be remembered means more to me now than ever so I jotted a few thoughts down.

I want to be remembered as:

  1. An ardent follower of Jesus who was aware of his imperfections and tried his best to tame them.
  2. A great husband
  3. A great father and grandfather
  4. A great son
  5. A great leader
  6. A great friend
  7. A person who inspired others to become the person God created them to be.
  8. A man who chose to be kind over being right.

I still have a lot of work to do.

How do you want to be remembered?

Judgment day is coming.

Be remembered for something that matters…like giving a carton of strawberries to someone and not telling anyone about it.

Sorry, Lori, you shouldn’t have told me. 🙂

Matthew 12:36, “I tell you, on the day of judgment people will give account for every careless word they speak,” (ESV)

Luke 6:35, “But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return, and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High, for he is kind to the ungrateful and the evil.”
