The following is a writing from a couple of years ago.
Reflection
When I saw the opening quote, I thought of my mom.
My mom is approaching ninety years old, and due to her health, she lives in a very narrow lane.
She spends her days reading, watching TV (when she’s not napping in her easy chair), talking on the phone, and enjoying visits from friends and family. She still goes to church every Sunday.
Although her dreams and imagination are most likely minimal compared to when she was in her prime, there is one vision she’s worked to fulfill for most of her life.
For years, my mom has given advent candles to the children of family and friends close to her.
Due to their love of the yearly ritual, some of these children received candles from mom well into their twenties.
Many years ago, my mom had a vision of bringing joy to kids during the Christmas season by providing a candle that was to be burned one day at a time beginning on December 1st and through Christmas morning.
This vision is still a reality today, as I secured bulk pricing for a box of candles, which tells me Mom is not planning on exiting to the eternal anytime soon.
BTW…My mom didn’t make it to her 90th, but while on her deathbed, she shared with my brother and me a list of people and organizations she wanted to bless with a portion of her life savings. I miss her daily, but her example lives on.
We are the only animal that can imagine and envision a future state.
Are you using your imagination to bring significance to the otherwise meaningless details of your life? Or, better yet, importance to someone else’s life?
