Thoughts From The Trail – Breaking From

Small things consistently done the right way will eventually produce great results.

Reflection

My triathlon training consists of three ten-week phases-base, build and peak.

Today I started week seventeen of my training, which means I am just halfway through the build phase and my total training for IM Muncie.

I had my fastest bike ride to date a couple of days ago. This accomplishment was no surprise because, from previous experience, I’ve come to expect breakthroughs and new personal records to occur sometime after the fifteenth week of training.

Facts

The above example is how it works with any habit or change we try to make in our life.

There may be several weeks at the beginning where we don’t see any improvement but we keep:

  • Exercising
  • Eating right
  • Praying
  • Meditating
  • Working
  • Writing
  • Painting
  • Drumming
  • Guitaring
  • Pianoing
  • Forgiving
  • Accepting
  • Living sober

Then a breakthrough happens, and we begin to see the fruits of our monotonous labor come to pass.

Deeper Thought

A breakthrough is actually a “break from.”

We break from our old habits (s) and enter a better way.

“Breaking from” is such a great feeling; the only way to “break from” is to keep moving forward regardless of the pace. To keep pulling and putting tension on the rope holding us to our past, and when we move forward long enough, the rope “snaps,” and we break from the old and enter a new arena in life.

Whatever you are doing.

Whatever habit you are trying to stop or start.

Whatever goal you are striving to attain.

Keep moving forward.

Keep putting tension on the rope holding you back.

The rope will eventually snap.

I always write from experience.

James 1:12, “Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him.”

AFFIRM YOUR P.E.A.C.E.

Plan – A dream/goal remains a dream until it is put into writing. Putting your dream or goal in writing is the first step in creating a PLAN to achieve it. When you fail to plan, you plan to fail.

Effort – Turning your dream/goal into reality requires a commitment to putting forth consistent and focused EFFORT toward the execution of your plan. Nothing great in life happens without working hard.

Attitude – Your chances of achieving your dream are exponentially increased if you believe you will achieve it. Always remember that your ATTITUDE determines your altitude in life.

Community – Nothing great in life happens by doing it alone. The chances of achieving your dream expand as your COMMUNITY of positive mentors and coaches expand. You become the average of the five people you spend the most time with…and yes, spending time with “people” through books and instructional videos factors into your average.

Energy – Chasing and achieving your dream requires optimal levels of mental, physical, and spiritual ENERGY. Put your dream in God’s hands and nurture your mental and physical being.
