Thorns or Roses

We can complain because rose bushes have thorns, or rejoice because thorn bushes have roses.

— Abraham Lincoln —

Complaining is such a waste of time as well as an energy and health drainer.

I’ve been given so many gifts in recovery but none more valuable than the gift of knowing if I’m not the problem, there is no solution.  In other words, if I’m complaining about something then I’ve just become “the problem.”

When confronted with a situation that is causing us to complain and lose our serenity we have three options:

  1. Change the situation…which usually involves getting someone else to change…not an easy thing to do.
  2. Accept the situation as it is by changing our attitude
  3. Remove ourselves from the situation

Notice ‘complaining’ wasn’t listed as an option.

Do you spend the majority of your time “enjoying” thorns or roses?
