The Way

Peace isn't the destination. Peace is the way.

— Unknown —

Yesterday morning I got up early and hung my fully loaded Oriole feeders on their respective hooks from our Sycamore tree which stands just outside the room where I do my morning spiritual exercises.

I believe I’ve become the “bird whisperer,” because shortly after I hung the feeders the Orioles started chirping at each other while zooming in for their morning breakfast.

We have three different species of Orioles–Baltimore, Bullocks, and Orchards–hanging out at our house this year.

They make my morning time with The Lord so peaceful and calming.

Despite all the craziness going on around us, peace is available 24/7…if we look for it.

The first time I saw Victor Frankl’s quote below, it changed the entire course of my life.

Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and freedom.

We are the only animal that God gave the gift of being able to think before we respond. Whatever occupies our “space” between stimulus and response will dictate how we respond.

Your “space” will be occupied by the people, places, things, and beliefs with whom you spend the majority of your time.

If you find yourself constantly battling the urge of responding angrily to the world around you, try spending more time with Jesus and nature than you do with the rest of the world.

Your response will change…I always write from experience.

Luke 10:38-42, “Now as they went on their way, Jesus entered a village. And a woman named Martha welcomed him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet and listened to his teaching. But Martha was distracted with much serving. And she went up to him and said, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me.” But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.”
