Reflection
Most of you know I’m a maturing jock (sounds better than old jock). I enjoy playing and watching sports; my favorite sport is the NFL.
Yesterday evening, before Super Bowl LIX started, I jotted down thoughts that distinguish the good from great in anything. That being Discipline and Attention to Detail. I have a pen from my HealthCare Pharmacy days, and the script on the pen says, “Doing the little things right.” That was one of our mantras, and that mantra took us a long way.
Excellence isn’t about talent alone. It’s about doing what needs to be done—even when you don’t feel like it. It’s about pushing through fatigue, boredom, and discomfort because you know the reward is worth it. The best athletes, artists, and professionals aren’t necessarily the most gifted. They are the ones who show up, day after day and put in the work.
Discipline is what separates the good from the great. It’s waking up early to train when no one is watching. It’s studying one more hour when your mind wants to quit. It’s going the extra mile when cutting corners would be so much easier. The path to mastery is often paved with moments of inconvenience, but those who persist through them are the ones who rise to the top.
But discipline alone isn’t enough. True excellence is also found in the most minor details. It’s in how a chef plates a dish, the way a musician perfects a single note, or how an athlete refines their form down to the slightest movement. The little things matter because they add up to something big. Overlooking details leads to mediocrity; perfecting them leads to greatness.
Most people want success, but few are willing to embrace the daily grind that gets them there. They look for shortcuts, hoping for a quick fix. But there is no substitute for consistent effort and an unwavering commitment to precision.
So, if you want to excel, don’t wait until you “feel” motivated. Show up. Do the work. Pay attention to the details. In the end, it’s not the big moments that define greatness—it’s the small, everyday choices that build toward something extraordinary, just like the Eagles handing it to the Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX.

Next year is the Bengals’ year…you heard it here first.
Isaiah 40:31, “But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.”
