The “Divine” Developer

Matthew 8:13 “Go! It will be done just as you believed it would.”

Many years ago while attending a summer basketball camp a motivational speaker talked with us about the importance of “visualization.” He said; “what you picture yourself doing is what you will do.” Years after this camp I read about this “self-fulfilling prophecy” concept in Norman Vincent Peale’s book “The Power of Positive Thinking.” In his book Peale writes about how powerful our thoughts and pictures in our mind are. In essence what we think about and picture ourselves doing…we will do.

A couple of days ago, I emailed my daughter reminding her of this concept. The last time I spoke with her I could tell she was dwelling on things she could not control and I sensed a little bit of “fear of failure” in the tone of her voice. I suggested she try and take 10 minutes each day to visualize being the best at everything she could control and to turn these thoughts over to God.

In the scripture from Matthew, Jesus was referring to a Centurion (a commander in the Roman army) who had approached Jesus in faith to have one of his servants healed. The servant was paralyzed and in terrible pain and the Centurion had faith that Jesus would heal him. It is worth noting that the Jews hated the Roman centurions because of their dominant and controlling behavior and it is safe to assume they figured there was no way Jesus was going to help this “nasty” person. But in this story Jesus gives the Centurion a hand and heals his servant simply because the Centurion believed and demonstrated this belief by asking Jesus for help.

Jesus says “Go it will be done just as you believed it would.”

What are you “believing” these days? What are you spending time “looking at” in your head? That which you picture yourself doing and becoming is what you will do and become. Most of the time success and failure begins with your thoughts and the pictures in your mind. The pictures in your mind can produce very powerful results whether they be positive or negative…it is your choice.

But even better than that your pictures can be life changing and transforming if you ask Jesus to “develop” them.

Try taking time each day (5-10 minutes) picturing “good stuff” in your head and turn these pictures over to the “Divine Developer.” More times than not the results will go beyond your own abilities and wildest imagination.
