The biggest game of your life…

John 8:12, “I am the light of the world.  Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

John 8:31-32, “…If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples.  Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

A friend and fellow blog reader of mine sent me a text the other night telling me how much he respected me for getting into the word first thing every morning.  For those of you who’ve been following this blog you know I often refer to what I consider my most important activity of my day and that is my morning devotion time where I read scripture, pray and get in touch with the Lord.

When I finally got serious about staying sober a day at a time back in August of 1987 I heard a common theme among those who were staying sober and that was they would get up every morning and ask God to keep them sober another day.  Being desperate and out of options I thought I would give it a try.  My prayer time back then was short and sweet and it was the third step prayer from Alcoholics Anonymous; “God I offer myself to Thee–to build with me and to do with me as Thou wilt.  Relieve me of the bondage of self, that I may better do Thy will.  Take away my difficulties, that victory over them may bear witness to those I would help of Thy Power, Thy Love, and Thy Way of life.  May I do Thy will always!”

Although my prayer and devotion time has expanded from 5 minutes to about 45 minutes over the years it is the one constant I’ve had in my life since my life rose from the depths of hell to an unbelievable God-blessed journey.  Please keep in mind a God-blessed journey does not indicate everything has been a bed of roses.  What it means is I’ve learned how to live life on life’s terms and when the challenges of life come my way I know God will take care of me…as long as I let Him.

Twenty-four years ago I prayed daily in order to stay sober.  Today there is more to it.  I pray, read scripture and spend time listening to God in order to get aligned with the truth.  Our world is full of lies today and being somewhat of an emotional type of a person, I am easily swayed by the lies of the world when I am not aligned with the truth.

This morning I was watching ESPN Game Day and they were touting tonight’s college football game between No. 1 LSU and No.2 Alabama as the game of the century.  I thought to myself, “what a lie and what a shallow world a person must live in to believe that hype; they are saying that in order to get a huge television audience.”  Then I thought about all of the people trying to overcome something they are in bondage to and thinking, “those are the real games of the century and they take place every day.”

What lies are you believing today?  If you are allowing the world to determine your thoughts and you know they are lies then you are obviously not aligned with the truth.  Look at each day as the “biggest game of your life” and make up your mind you are going to beat the lies with the truth.  And the best way to do that is to get in touch with the truth first thing in the morning.

And by the way the real game of the century took place back on November 18, 2006 where my Ohio State Buckeyes beat the team up north 42-39…OSU was ranked #1 and Michigan was ranked #2… 🙂
