Roof Leaks

Thankful...for each new morning with its light, for rest and shelter of the night, for health and food, for love and friends, for everything Thy goodness sends.

— Ralph Waldo Emerson —

Last week we had a couple of “1st world problems” thrown our way.

The roof to our house began leaking as well as the roof to one of our rental properties.

Some people would have immediately gone to the standard thought, “The devil is attacking us, why did he make our roofs leak?”

The devil doesn’t make roofs leak, weather and age makes roofs leak.

Where the devil does do his work is in the thoughts which are born from having a roof leak. I knew I had a choice to lament and worry about how much money it was going to cost to get them replaced or I could be thankful I had a roof over my head when millions of people in the world do not.

Emerson’s opening quote is so powerful and true.

If we focus on “Thy goodness” when our roof leaks instead of the devil’s badness, things will turn out just fine.

Where is your focus when your ‘roof’ leaks?

Psalm 118:24, “This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.”  (ESV)
