Reflection
When I saw the opening quote, I thought about a goal I had set for myself later in life. In 2019, at the mature age of 60, I took up drums; something I’d always wanted to do. My instructor handed me a sheet of Basic Rock Patterns and said, “Practice these constantly.”
I started slowly, monotonously, and honestly badly.
But gradually, muscle memory built.
Today, I play at a solid “C” level for most rock songs.
Which means I can sort of play to such rock anthems as “Fool In The Rain,” by Led Zeplin, “Free Bird,” by Lynyrd Skynyrd, “Day After Day,” by Badfinger, and “Bang The Drum All Day,” by Todd Rundgren. Being able to sort of play to some of my favorite rock songs was always the goal.
Momentum is one of the most underestimated forces in a purposeful life. We expect a single breakthrough moment. Instead, breakthroughs are just consistent, unrelenting, boring practice made visible.
Every small action votes for who you’re becoming.
Discipline quietly becomes identity.
The flywheel turns more easily with each revolution.
Keep going.
Next up for me is “Roseanna,” by Toto…very challenging…but I’m always up to a good challenge. 🙂
Soul Search
- Where do I have positive momentum I can accelerate?
- Where have I lost momentum, and what is the smallest action that would restart it?
“Do not despise these small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin.” — Zechariah 4:10 (NLT)
