Taking Action – Day 19 – Giving Up is Action

Healing often begins with three brave words: 'I need help.'

— JMeyer —

Reflection:

Not all positive action comes from sheer willpower or mind over matter. Sometimes the most courageous thing we can do is throw in the towel, wave the white flag, and admit that we simply cannot do this alone.

Our culture celebrates the self-made, the strong, the ones who push through, but there is a quiet, underrated heroism in saying, “I’m done fighting this by myself.”

The most impactful action I ever took in my life was when I surrendered to my addiction to drugs and alcohol and sought help.

Not white-knuckling it one more time.

Not making another private promise to stop…which I did hundreds of times.

Surrender.

It felt like defeat in the moment, but it turned out to be the first real victory I had known in years.

Sometimes the best action we can take is to give up the illusion of control, ask for help, and then, perhaps the hardest part, actually listen to wise counsel. Not just hear it but receive it.

Soul Search:

  • Where am I struggling in silence when I could ask for help?
  • Who in my life would feel honored to support me if I simply asked?

“Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor.” Ecclesiastes 4:9 (NIV)
