Seeds and Apples

Anyone can count the seeds in an apple. Only God knows the number of apples in a seed.

— Robert Schuller —

Last Thursday my travels took me through the Dayton International Airport. During my days of countless number of business trips, I journeyed through the Dayton airport many times and would often stop and eat at a bagel shop that was strategically located on the path to the gates where I was usually headed.

Over the years I stopped and grabbed breakfast, lunch, or dinner at this particular bagel shop and I always marveled at the lady who managed it. It’s important for me to note that over the course of my business career I became quite curious about customer service which led me to be the ultimate observer of employees of any and all businesses and the manager of this bagel shop was one of the best I had ever observed.

Every time I ate a sandwich at her shop I would tell her that it was the best one I ever had. I wasn’t flattering her; it was the truth. Her commitment to her work not only showed in her effort in running an efficient shop but also in the product she delivered.

Last Thursday, after consuming a luscious ham and cheese panini, I went over to her and said, “That was the best panini sandwich, I’ve ever eaten.” Her face lit up as I turned and headed to my gate.

I’m not sharing this story to toot my own horn. When I saw the quote by Robert Schuller I thought to myself, “It is so simple to sow seeds if we journey through life with our hearts open to where God wants us to throw them.”

Last Friday, I sowed a seed in the spirit of a faithful worker of the airport’s bagel shop and only God knows how many “apples” it may create.

2 Corinthians 9:6, “The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully.”
