Reflection:
I know I’ve shared this story before, but some moments are etched so deeply into who you are that they’re worth retelling.
It was my junior year playing college basketball, and I was buried under a mountain of pharmacy coursework. Sleep was a luxury I couldn’t afford, and it showed—my legs were heavy, my game off. I finally sat down with my coach to explain the situation, hoping for a bit of grace.
He listened quietly, then leaned in and said, “Jay, excuses are like our hind ends—everyone’s got one, and they all stink.” (Let’s say he used a slightly saltier version.)
That blunt truth hit harder than any workout or practice I ever experienced.
From that day on, I made a vow: excuses would never write my story.
Today, whenever I begin to think thoughts that try to hold another person, place, thing, or situation accountable for the results of my life, I turn them over to God.
If I’m not the problem, there is no solution.
Soul Search:
What excuse have you been making that it’s time to surrender to God?
2 Peter 1:3 (NIV) – “His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life…”
