Recovery Month – Day 11 – Reality is Persistent

Reality is merely an illusion; albeit a persistent one.

— Albert Einstein —

A sobering reflection…

It’s impossible to post a writing on this day without first pausing to reflect upon the evil tragedy that took place twenty-one years ago on 9/11.

May we never forget and may God bless those devastated by this evil act with comfort, peace, and strength now and always.

September is National Recovery Month.

My blogs will focus throughout September on addiction and its life-destroying tendencies. The writings derive from my experiences of battling addiction and living a life of recovery.

I captured these writings and more in my book, “Victory Over Opiates.” Click the title for more information.

These specific writings are focused on the ACT acronym.

ACT leads to sobriety…

A – Acknowledge you have a problem, are powerless over it, and need help.

– Connect with a power greater than you and people with solutions to help you conquer your problem.

T – Take positive, recovery-oriented action every day.

Today’s post is a continuation of yesterday’s (Sept. 10).

So, Lori and I show up for my appointment with the chemical dependency expert.

Have you ever taken a test and thought you aced it, but shockingly you find that you failed it miserably?

This happened during my first ever chemical dependency assessment (test).

First, you probably have a drug problem when you have to take a chemical dependency test/assessment…just my opinion.

Anyway, I took the assessment and lied on about half of it because if I told the truth, it would mean I had a problem, and the psychologist, Bob1, and my wife were correct.

After reviewing my assessment results, the chemical dependency expert, Bob2, looked at Lori and me and said, “Jay, you need help. We have a bed open and can start the recovery process today.”

I thought, “Wait a minute, I lied throughout the assessment to look like I didn’t need help! What the heck is going on?!” I then thought, but thankfully didn’t say, “You can ram that bed up your behind!” And then I looked at Lori and said, “We are out of here.”

At this point in my road to recovery, I figured all the Bobs in the world were out to get me, or I had a much bigger problem than I realized.

It’s worth noting that once I got into recovery, Lori told me that she had talked to Bob2, the chemical dependency expert, before meeting with him. In essence, she had taken the assessment for me and aced it. 🙂

While I was dying a slow death because of my unwillingness to accept reality, my wife was doing some very important connecting behind the scenes.

We will continue to look at Connect in a couple of days.
