Real Leaders

A good leader takes a little more than his share of the blame, and a little less than his share of the credit.

IMG_2275A couple of weeks ago I conducted an impromptu Facebook survey about leadership and what traits people like to see in leaders.  Well over two hundred people responded and although the results did not surprise me, what did surprised me was how many people know what effective leadership looks like.

The number one vote getter was Integrity.  Integrity had almost twice as many votes as its nearest competitor-Coaching.  Integrity included such attributes as honesty, trustworthiness, walking the walk, doing what you say you will do etc…  People appreciate leaders who are real people.  People appreciate leaders who are not only honest to others but honest with themselves.

As mentioned earlier, the next attribute receiving the most votes was Coaching.  Any and all statements about putting a team together, mentoring, growing people, delegating and collaborating were rolled into Coaching.

A very close third place belonged to Servant Leader.  People appreciate leaders who are humble and not arrogant.

Integrity-Coaching-Serving…none of these require special gifts and talents.  They simply require an internal compass that knows which way true north is, humility, and the desire to grow others.

BTW…these three traits were the traits of my one and only idol–Jesus.
