Fear and Pulling Over

If you only pray when you're in trouble...you're in trouble.

If you only pray when you’re in trouble…you’re in trouble.  ~Unknown

Last week I was out of town on business and when this occurs it usually gives me an opportunity to interview a taxi driver or two.

Just like a janitor is with most any organization, a taxi driver knows more about the area he drives than the local travel agent.

Not all “cabbies” are talkative but the gentleman I had last week was very talkative and quite brilliant.  We discussed politics, conspiracy theories, big banking, Shakespeare, and the economy.

The one thing he said which struck me the most, was when he was talking about our intuition or those “gut feelings” we often have about something.  He said, “There are some days I know God is trying to tell me something so I just pull my car off to the side of the road and listen.”  He went on to say, “Our world is running so fast that no one is taking time to listen to the Spirit who is responsible for everything.”

Of course I wondered if he practiced this discipline with passengers in his car…

The reason I am sharing this story with you is because I believe spending quality “listening time” with our Creator is the most important discipline we need to practice if we want to have the mental component of our wheel of life in balance.

I have found the two best ways for me to listen is during my morning devotion time with God and also when I exercise in a manner that shuts my brain off and turns the Spirit’s power on.

What do you intentionally do to listen to your Creator?

How often do you do it?

Sometimes the best way to combat our propensity for creating anxiety from fear is to simply pull over and listen.

For me, I know the peace in my mind is directly proportionate to how often I pull over and listen to Him instead of the committee in my head.
