Proverbs 7…about living

Proverbs 7:2, “Keep my commands and you will live; guard my teachings as the apple of your eye.” (NLT)

Proverbs 7:27, “Her house is a highway to the grave, leading down to the chambers of death.” (NLT)

Although the 7th Proverb hits on the evils of a man being attracted to a married woman, I also view it as the evils associated with being lured into doing anything that stands in the way of us being all we can be for God.  It could be extramarital affairs (which include pornography), food, shopping, drugs, alcohol, gambling, anger, gossip, etc…

All bad habits and/or addictions begin innocently and the initial acting out is often done out of curiosity or to fill a void or numb some type of pain.  This Proverb is God’s way of warning us about the death associated with habitual bad decisions and the life promised when keeping his commands…pretty simple but we sure complicate things.

Paul writes some more about this topic in the book of Ephesians 5:15-18; “So be careful how you live.  Don’t live like fools, but like those who are wise.  Make the most of every opportunity in these evil days.  Don’t act thoughtlessly, but understand what the Lord wants you to do.  Don’t be drunk with wine, because that will ruin your life.  Instead , be filled with the Holy Spirit.”

Thank God we have a forgiving and loving God, but more importantly a God who gives us the instruction manual defining what right-living is, as well as the Holy Spirit to tap into and use as a guide 24/7.  All we need to do is choose His way instead of ours and if you are having trouble following God’s instructions by yourself, find a mentor to help you.

(Several years ago I was encouraged by a friend to make the Proverb that corresponds with the day of the month, a part of my morning devotion.  There are 31 Proverbs and although I’ve been reading them consistently for a number of years, each time I read them I seem to draw another “life nugget” that helps me better deal with life and live the way God wants me to live.  My morning Proverb time is simply a part of my personal improvement plan.  I know I am less than 24 hours away from messing things up if I don’t ask God to be the director of my day, first thing, each and every day.)
