Â
Over a five year period in the 1980’s, my wheel of life was slowly destroyed by the cunning, baffling and insidious nature of drug addiction.
The first area to go was my spiritual being. Instead of turning to God when life wasn’t going like I wanted it to, I turned to drugs and alcohol.
Next to go were my key relationships. I was ashamed at what I had become so I shut out the people closest to me.
My mental state began to weaken and the only way I could keep it strong was to drink or drug. This form of “self-medicating” simply led to higher levels of anxiety, depression and paranoia, which really made me question, what use there was in living.
Slowly, my physical state began to deteriorate. I lost weight and my body would go into withdrawal (the flu multiplied by 100) when I would go for more than a day without my drugs.
My financial condition was the last to go but when the other four areas crashed so did our finances.

WHEEL OF LIFE – FOCUS AREAS
We may have the greatest intentions in the world when it comes to living our purpose and chasing our dreams.
But our ability of turning our intentions into worthwhile results is greatly reduced if we are not taking care of our WHEEL OF LIFE FOCUS AREAS: Spiritual, Mental, Physical, Relational, Financial.
Slowly but surely God and I were able to put my Wheel of Life back together and today I remain focused on keeping these five areas fully inflated and balanced, one day at at time.
Although this post is heavily weighted for my readers who are addicts or are in recovery from addiction, it applies to anyone and everyone.
God gives all of us the ability to do great things with our lives but great things won’t happen if we aren’t taking great care of ourselves.
Tomorrow we will take a look at our spiritual being.

1 Corinthians 6:19-20, “Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself, for God bought you with a high price. So you must honor God with your body.” (NLT)
