The following is a reflection from a few years ago…
Many years ago, I was committed to becoming the best basketball player I could be.
I loved playing basketball.
When I was in the 7th grade, I committed to shooting 100 free throws every single day because at the basketball camp I attended the previous summer, they gave a trophy to the best free throw shooter of the camp.
I was determined to win that award the following summer. I would not allow my size (5 feet tall, 80 pounds) to get in the way of achieving this award, as I would be pitted against juniors and seniors in high school.
We had a basketball bank board and rim in the driveway outside our house, and every day, regardless of the weather, I shot 100 free throws. I had a clipboard hanging on a nail in our garage with sheets of paper where I recorded my results.
In late July of 1971, I walked onto the floor of the old field house of Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, to face a future All-Ohioan and senior-to-be in a free throw shoot-off. He and I were in the finals. This was the championship match, and I beat him by one free throw.
I can still recall that experience so vividly because I learned so much from going through it. I learned the power of setting a goal, making a plan, and executing the plan.
