Moms

I believe God invented the word perseverance when mothers came onto the scene thousands of years ago.

I shared this writing back in May of 2017…

I was more than a handful for my mom.  For the longest time, I thought getting my mouth washed out with soap was simply a normal part of the personal hygiene process.

As I look back on some of my childhood, adolescence, and early adulthood capers, the acronym PITA comes to mind…Pain In The A$$.

Regardless of all the distress, I caused my poor mom, she was always there for me.  She persevered through some major stuff with me and for that I’m grateful.

I could write hundreds of stories about the adventures of “Jay and Jannie” but there is one story that stands above all the rest.

It was the morning after Jordan had been taken by an emergency vehicle to Children’s Medical Center in Dayton, Ohio. He had survived the night but no one knew if he was going to live to see another day. He was only two days old.

After arriving at Children’s, I sat by Jordan’s plastic bubble in the NICU unit for what seemed like an eternity.  I was “it” for the time being because Lori had not been discharged from the hospital. A nurse sensed my exhaustion and encouraged me to get some sleep, so I retreated to a couch in the lounge just outside the unit.

Early the next morning I was awakened by someone shaking my foot.

When I opened my eyes, there stood my mom.

I was 27 years old and scared out of my mind and I’m sure my mom could see fear and angst written all over my face.  In a very poised and quiet voice, Mom said, “Jay, things are going to be alright. Jordan is going to be a special child and we will do everything we can to help you with him.”

Mom with Jord the moment he got home from the hospitial.

Mom with Jord, the day he got home from the hospital.

At that moment I had no clue what she meant, but she was exactly right.  How she knew he would survive and be one of God’s special kids is beyond me.

Today I know why she knew–because she was my mom–she always knew.

Jordan and I stopped over to visit Mom and Dad last night and at the ripe young age of 84 she sat and played with Jordy like she’s done for the past 31 years.

She’s ALWAYS been there for him, us, and especially me.

#grateful

Happy Mother’s Day to all of you Mothers out there!

Proverbs 31:25-30, “Strength and dignity are her clothing, and she laughs at the time to come. She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue. She looks well to the ways of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness. Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: “Many women have done excellently, but you surpass them all.” …
