Perseverance and Focus

Your soul goes to the object of your focus.

IMG_2827I was very fortunate to have a mentor who guided me through my addiction recovery process. Just the other day, I commented to my wife how Vic poured everything he had into me so I wouldn’t lose my family like he had.  I owe so much to Vic.  He was several years older than me and had joined alcoholics anonymous six years prior to me coming onto the scene.

Vic taught me how to live sober but he also taught me a lesson on how to live life when faced with death.

Vic always struggled with emphysema and the disease eventually forced him to live his final months in an assisted living facility.  On one of my visits, I asked him how he was doing.  He said, “Jay for the longest time I would pray to God and say, ‘why me?’  Finally, during one prayer, I surrendered all of me and said, ‘why not me God?’ and in that moment everything changed.

He went on to say that he was now facing his daily battle equipped with peace and grace which gave him more energy to fight than he ever had before.

Your soul definitely goes to the object of your focus.

When I’m focused on everything I’m losing because of the COVID-19 pandemic, my soul becomes depressed.

When I’m focused on the many lessons I’m learning while growing through this horrible pandemic, my soul is alive and well.

How about you?

Where is your focus?

Isaiah 26:3, You will keep the mind that is dependent on You in perfect peace, for it is trusting in You.
