Perseverance and Uphill

Everything worthwhile is uphill.

— John Maxwell —

One of my all-time favorite “book mentors” is John Maxwell. He’s written dozens of books on leadership over the years and I am pretty certain I’ve read the majority of them.

Each morning, after my devotion time, I read for at least ten minutes and recently, I’ve been doing a third read on Maxwell’s book, Developing the Leader Within You 2.0.

I recommend this book to anyone who wants to get better. Even if you aren’t leading an organization, you are responsible for leading your life.

Yesterday morning, while doing my Maxwell “mentoring session,” I came across this poem which is on page 187 of the book noted above and thought it was so appropriate and timely for what we are all going through.

When things go wrong, as they sometimes will,

And the road you’re trudging seems all up hill,

When the funds are low and the debts are high,

And you want to smile, but you have to sigh,

When care is pressing you down a bit,

Rest, if you must–but don’t you quit.

Life is queer with its twists and turns,

As every one of us sometimes learns,

As many a failure turns about

When he might have won had he stuck it out.

Don’t give up though the pace seems slow–

You may succeed with another blow.

Success is failure turned inside out–

The silver tint of the clouds of doubt,

And you never can tell how close you are,

It may be near when it seems far;

So stick to the fight when you’re hardest hit–

It’s when things seem worst that you mustn’t quit.
