The opening quote struck a chord in me as the world continues to overcome an invisible and deadly little virus.
If you are someone who is dwelling too much on all the “uncontrollables” associated with the COVID-19 pandemic–this writing is for you.
If you are someone who is losing peace and serenity because of the way other people are handling the COVID-19 virus–this writing is for you.
If you are someone who really isn’t into worrying about COVID-19 but you lack peace and serenity–this writing is for you.
If you are someone–this writing is for you. 🙂
The following prayer changed my life:
God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference.
The prayer is the Serenity Prayer, written by Reinhold Niebuhr in the early 1930s.
For years Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) has kicked off its meetings with the Serenity Prayer.
I was introduced to the prayer at my first AA meeting some thirty-four years ago, and after attending several hundred AA meetings, my spiritual DNA adopted it and it is now a part of me.
Today, it is my go-to prayer because when I lack serenity, it is always due to me trying to change and control something I cannot change and control, or it is due to me not changing something within myself that needs to be changed–usually my attitude, effort, or perspective.
Even though it is short and to the point, when the Serenity Prayer is prayed in earnest, God will deliver us from attempting to control people, places, things, and situations, that are out of our control.
If prayed in earnest, God will identify those things within us that need changed and give us the courage to make the changes.
AND
We will experience less suffering (see the opening quote) and more serenity–if prayed in earnest.
Questions
How is your serenity?
Do you work to change yourself and not other people, places, things, and situations?
Facts
Having peace and serenity is all about knowing what you can and cannot change.
I always write from experience.
Proverbs 3:5-6, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.”
