National Recovery Month – Day 7 – Step 5 “Admitted”

Shame derives its power from being unspeakable.

— Brene' Brown —

Reflection

Step Five asks us to admit to God, ourselves, and another human being the exact nature of our wrongs…what an extremely uncomfortable yet incredibly freeing step.

See my September 2 writing for a full list of the Twelve Steps.

Shame thrives in darkness. It is one of the enemy’s most powerful tools, convincing us to beat ourselves up and live with a diminished sense of worth. And when we believe we are worth less, we begin to live like we are capable of less. Low self-worth is the enemy of doing something great with your life.

Recovery exposes that lie.

I’ll never forget my sponsor telling me, “We all mess up; what you do with the mess will determine your future.”

When we share our truth with a safe person and discover that we’re still accepted, shame begins losing its grip. God never asked us to carry our burdens alone.

Soul Search

Is there something I’m carrying alone that needs to be brought into the light?
