National Recovery Month – Day 27 – Keep Coming Back

Success is the sum of small efforts, repeated day in and day out.

— Robert Collier —

Reflection

Anything we become good at is usually the result of repetition and consistent practice.

I loved basketball, but I learned early that it wasn’t an easy sport to master. I spent countless summer hours on the hot asphalt of the old Covington elementary school court practicing and trying to get better.

Today, I do a lot of speaking for a living. That didn’t just happen either. It took hours of practice.

I could go on and on about what repetition has taught me.

But perhaps the most important lesson came through recovery.

I started out full of fear, guilt, shame, remorse, insecurity…you name it, that was me.

But I kept showing up.

Meeting after meeting.

At the end of each meeting, we’d stand in a circle, hold hands, pray the Lord’s Prayer, and then look at one another and say:

“Keep coming back; it works if you work it.”

And you know what?

The people who made it kept coming back.

It wasn’t rocket science.

Recovery isn’t built primarily through spectacular moments. It’s built through showing up. Meeting after meeting. Prayer after prayer. Conversation after conversation. Day after day.

There will be days when we feel inspired and days when we don’t.

Keep coming back anyway.

Faithfulness over time produces something intensity never can: a transformed life.

You don’t have to feel strong today.

Just keep showing up and doing the next right thing.

Where in my life do I simply need to keep showing up?

“Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” — Galatians 6:9
