Reflection
Step Twelve turns recovery outward: “Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to other alcoholics and practice these principles in all our affairs.” (Click here for a full rendition of the Twelve Steps.)
Something remarkable happens when we help another person: our own recovery grows stronger.
Our pain gains purpose.
The experiences we once wished we could erase become tools God can use to encourage someone else.
We don’t need all the answers. Sometimes we simply need to say, “I’ve been there. You’re not alone. Here’s what helped me.”
As I progressed in recovery, I discovered the truth in the saying, “You can’t keep what you have unless you give it away.”
And I believe that applies to more than recovery. Whatever we carry tends to spill into the lives of others—peace, joy, goodness, faith, and kindness… or chaos, self-pity, cruelty, fear, and anger.
What we give away has a way of growing within us.
