National Recovery Month – Day 20 – Gratitude Changes The Lens

Gratitude turns what we have into enough.

— Aesop —

Reflection

I remember hearing someone in an AA meeting saying something like this: “Gratitude and resentment struggle to occupy the same space. It’s hard to be resentful when you are grateful.”

I really needed to hear that because I was full of resentments in early recovery, and nothing makes an addict more prone to relapse than carrying resentments and not dealing with them.

When I’m focused exclusively on what’s missing, wrong, unfair, or difficult, life becomes small.

Gratitude widens the lens.

It doesn’t deny pain.

It simply reminds me that pain isn’t the whole picture. Another sunrise. Another conversation. Another sober day. Another opportunity to help someone. Another breath.

These are not small things.

Gratitude doesn’t necessarily change what happens to us. It changes how we experience what happens.

Soul Search

What are three things I can thank God for right now?

“Give thanks in all circumstances.” — 1 Thessalonians 5:18
