National Recovery Month – Day 10 – Cleaning Up

You can't go back and change the beginning, but you can start where you are and change the ending.

Reflection

I’ve always viewed the Twelve Steps this way:

Steps 1 – 3 – Give Up

Steps 4 – 9 – Clean Up

Steps 10-12 – Grow Up

Click here for the Twelve Steps as noted in my September 2 writing.

Steps Eight and Nine are the final steps in cleaning up the wreckage from our past and moving recovery from internal change to relational repair.

We identify people we’ve harmed and, when appropriate, make amends. An amend is more than saying, “I’m sorry.” It means taking responsibility and changing our behavior.

We cannot control whether someone forgives us. We cannot rewrite yesterday. But we can clean up our side of the street.

Making things right where possible allows us to stop running from our past and begin living differently today.

Soul Search

Is there a relationship where God is asking me to take responsibility for my part?

“If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.” — Romans 12:18
