Promises and Character

People with good intentions, make promises. People with good character keep them.

Memories…

When I played the game of basketball, I loved to shoot, but it’s no fun shooting if the ball is not going through the goal. So during my high school and college basketball playing days, I spent hours honing the art of shooting a basketball.

Several components add together to shoot a basketball correctly. But, for me, one element was the most critical, and that was the follow-through.

Back to the opening quote.

Facts

The most critical component is the follow-through when making a promise, whether that promise is to others or ourselves.

Many people take way too many good intentions with them to the grave.

Do you make promises to yourself and others?

How’s your follow-through?

Stephen Covey, in his book, “The 7 Habits of Highly Successful People,” said that our character is directly proportionate to how well we keep our promises to ourselves and others.

Matthew 5:37, “Let what you say be simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything more than this comes from evil.”
