Last Monday I wrote about the role learning plays in becoming a solid leader. After writing the post I began thinking about my role as a golf instructor…I bet you didn’t know that I give golf lessons. 🙂
I’ve read many books on golf and have a very good understanding of the golf swing. Â In fact, if you play a round of golf with me and you aren’t striking the ball squarely, it’s inevitable that I will try to help you with your swing. Â The only drawback with my attempt to help others with their golf game is my swing is pretty pathetic because I very seldom play.
What golfer would take lessons from a golfer who very seldom plays and has a pathetic golf swing?
The same holds true for leadership. Â It’s one thing to read books and learn how to lead, and talk leadership–but it is an entirely different game when you put what you learn into action.
I’ve been teaching courses on leadership for a few years and my attendees’ ears always perk up when I share personal leadership stories (both the good and not so good stories), from my years as a business leader.
One of my favorite books in the Bible is the book of James. Â In James, the author strongly encourages us to put our belief into action:
- Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Â Do what it says. Â Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. Â (James 1:22-24)
Anyone can talk leadership…Monday Morning Leadership is about my walk, as my goal is to share key points I’ve learned over the years in order to help you hone in on what’s important in order to become the best leader of yourself and others you can possibly be.
Next week we will take a look at the most important attribute it takes to effectively lead ourselves and others–honesty.
