Reflection
I’ve been an Ohio State Buckeye football fan since 1968 when the Bucks, led by quarterback Rex Kern, tailbacks John Brockington and Leo Hayden, fullback Jim Otis, and star defensive players Jack Tatum and Jim Stillwagon, ran the table to a 10-0 season.
We Buckeye fans have grown accustomed to winning, and once again, we are in the National Championship game and will face the Notre Dame Fighting Irish on January 20th.
As an ex-jock, I know that winning is not easy. It takes a lot of practice, perseverance, and the ability to fight through adversity.
There is often a very fine line between success and failure.
If you watched the Buckeyes beat Texas this past Friday night, you know the previous sentence to be true.

The game was very tight, and with just under four minutes to play, Texas had the ball and a first down at the OSU one-yard line. The Bucks were up on the Longhorns 21-14 at the time.
Most of us were conceding the score and had our eyes set on a final drive to propel us into the national championship game. The OSU players had other plans as they held Texas on four straight plays, with the final play resulting in a “scoop and score” by the Bucks’s Jack Sawyer as he recovered a fumble he had caused and rumbled 83 yards to pay dirt.
After the game, Coach Day talked about how life is about facing adversity and rising to the occasion. He praised the team’s work ethic and preparation for achieving their latest goal.
Jack Sawyer talked about how playing for Ohio State and winning a national was a dream he had as a little kid. He also gave a shout-out to God and gave Him the credit.
To summarize a recipe for winning…
- Dream
- Prepare
- Persevere
- Luck
- God
Luck is what happens when preparation, perseverance, and faith in God, meets opportunity that once was a dream.
Romans 8:28-30, “And we know that for those who love God, all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. For those whom he foreknew, he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son so that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. And those he predestined he also called, and those he called he also justified, and those whom he justified he also glorified.”
