Lent, Peace, and Battling The Opposition

I want to live my life in such a way that when I get out of bed in the morning, the devil says, "Aw shit, he's up!

— Steve Maraboli —

One of the positives throughout this crazy pandemic has been the number of churches sharing online worship.

This past Sunday morning I was watching our church’s service online through Facebook Live. As you may know, anyone watching live Facebook feeds has the ability to comment and everyone watching the event sees all the comments.

It’s heartwarming when you see comments like…

Watching with my mom at her home! She was so worried about missing church.

Thanks for giving us hope on this unknown journey!

I love everything about my church! Thank You!

Then shock and reality hit me as I read the following comment…

“Blank” you! You idiot!

I read the comment again to figure out the context it was written from and I quickly came to the conclusion that the comment was directed at our pastor. He was in the middle of sharing a powerful message on whether or not we live in faith (God) or fear (devil) as we navigate through these uncharted waters.

My flesh wanted me to comment back at the moron…please note…that is my flesh thinking.

Then I composed myself and decided to ignore him.

Then I realized that the devil has got to be going crazy as he is observing one of his favorite playgrounds (Facebook) turn into a platform for God to share His love and hope through His people.

This is a time, more than ever before, to be that person Steve Maraboli is referring to in his opening quote.

Keep the devil at bay by putting on the full armor of God and going to battle against him with truth, righteousness, peace, faith, and lots of prayer.

Below, is a battle plan the Apostle Paul outlined almost 2000 years ago and it still works today…even on social media.

A Fight to the Finish

10-12 And that about wraps it up. God is strong, and he wants you strong. So take everything the Master has set out for you, well-made weapons of the best materials. And put them to use so you will be able to stand up to everything the Devil throws your way. This is no afternoon athletic contest that we’ll walk away from and forget about in a couple of hours. This is for keeps, a life-or-death fight to the finish against the Devil and all his angels.

13-18 Be prepared. You’re up against far more than you can handle on your own. Take all the help you can get, every weapon God has issued, so that when it’s all over but the shouting you’ll still be on your feet. Truth, righteousness, peace, faith, and salvation are more than words. Learn how to apply them. You’ll need them throughout your life. God’s Word is an indispensable weapon. In the same way, prayer is essential in this ongoing warfare. Pray hard and long. Pray for your brothers and sisters. Keep your eyes open. Keep each other’s spirits up so that no one falls behind or drops out. (Ephesians 6:10-18 The Message)

John 10:10, “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.”

Journal your thoughts:

What am I grateful for today?

In what way(s) will I bring light to the world today?

What will I deny myself so I may draw closer to God and gain more peace in my life today?

God, I offer myself to Thee—To build with me and to do with me as Thou wilt. Relieve me of the bondage of self, that I may better do Thy will. Take away my difficulties that victory over them may bear witness to those I would help of Thy Power, Thy Love, and Thy Way of life. May I do Thy will always! Amen.
