Armstrong Williams observed, “A belief in God helps provide a foundation to arbitrate our decisions. Without this foundation, we are condemned to live essentially formless lives.” Without something solid beneath us, our choices become reactions, shaped by mood, circumstance, or the opinions of whoever spoke to us last.
Life without a fixed foundation drifts. It bends to every wind…I always write from experience.
Scripture offers us that foundation. Jesus said in Matthew 7:24-25: “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.”
A life built on God isn’t rigid; it’s rooted. When decisions get hard, we don’t have to guess. We return to what we know is true, and we build from there.
Today, ask yourself: what is my life built on? If it’s shifting sand…comparison, approval, fear; invite God to become your foundation instead. Let His truth arbitrate your choices, and watch your life take shape with purpose instead of drifting formlessly through each day.
Psalms 119:33-37
Teach me, O Lord, to follow your decrees; then I will keep them to the end.
Give me understanding, and I will keep your law and obey it with all my heart.
Direct me in the path of your commands, for I will find delight there.
Turn my heart toward your statutes and not toward selfish gain.
Turn my eyes away from worthless things; preserve my life according to your word.
