Purpose & Treasure

Once a man was asked, ‘what did you gain by regularly praying to God?’ The man replied, ‘nothing…but let me tell you what I lost: Anger, ego, greed, depression, insecurity, and fear of death.’ Sometimes the answer to our prayers is not gaining but losing; which ultimately is the gain.

Sometimes the best way to find out who we are is by first identifying who we aren’t or who we don’t want to be.

I haven’t memorized many scripture verses over the years but one that I’ve hung onto and continue to cling to is found in the books of Luke and Matthew and comes from the mouth of Jesus:

“Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be.” (Matthew 6:21, NLT)

If you connect the verse from Matthew to Proverbs 4:23, “Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life,” it becomes pretty clear that our thoughts, words and deeds rise from our heart and/or our “treasure.”

If our thoughts, words and deeds are all about pleasing ourselves then it’s easy to detect who and what our treasure is.

If our heart is set on pleasing God then our thoughts words and deeds become treasure to the world.

Before we are able to identify who we are, after we’ve decided Whose we are, it is helpful to make a list of everything we don’t want to be.

Taking an inventory and clearing out the trash from our hearts that we once viewed as treasure is a pivotal step in knowing and becoming who we really are.

Reread the quote at the beginning. What do you need to lose and turn over to God on a daily basis?

Luke 6:45, “A good man brings good things out of the goodness stored up in his heart.”
