How may I help you God?

I was talking with a friend the other day and shared the fact that I felt as though I hit a dry spell in my faith walk. No matter how many different ways I prayed and read scripture it was like God wasn’t listening or talking to me. I was seeking guidance about something in my life and I kept getting nothing. My friend shared with me the fact that God was probably allowing me to walk in the desert in order to motivate me to reach out more.

So I decided to reach out more. I increased my prayer time and even went to a total surrender position of being on all four’s while praying. Then it happened. A couple of days ago during my prayer time God spoke to me and he said; “Jay instead of asking for help from me, why don’t you ask how you can help me?” It was like I got hit by a ton of bricks. Can you say selfish, self-centered, self-seeking….i.e. ego??????

Sometimes we get so hung up on our own shh…stuff that we forget what we are here to do and that is to be the hands and feet of God. A life run by EGO (Easing God Out) is a sure-fire way of allowing satan to mess with our minds. Ego can manifest itself in so many different ways and can overtake us even when we are praying, reading scripture and worshiping. Especially when our prayer, reading and worship is all focused on helping ourselves. Ego wants us to put ourselves first. God tells us to love Him first and to love others like we love ourselves. If this is the way it is supposed to be, then there is no room for ego when it comes to living the Christian life.

I decided to go back to the basics and started praying the 3rd step prayer from page 63, of the 3rd edition of “The Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous” each and every morning. This is something I did in early sobriety and for some reason got away from it. The prayer is short, sweet and most of all “ego-deflating.”

“God, I offer myself to Thee–to build with me and to do with me as Thou wilt. Relieve me of the bondage of self, that I may better do Thy will. Take away my difficulties, that victory over them may bear witness to those I would help of Thy Power, Thy Love, and Thy Way of life. May I do Thy will always!” AMEN

The 3rd step prayer is the greatest ego-deflating prayer ever written. Amazing how smooth the week has gone since I’ve been deflating the old ego and offering myself up to God a day at a time

If you’ve been seeking God’s help and you don’t feel like he is responding try asking God how you can be of help to Him. This life is not about our plans and hopes and dreams, it is about fulfilling God’s purpose by helping him out through our plans, hopes and dreams.

Proverbs 19:21; “Many are the plans in a man’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails.”
