Happiness is an Inside Job

Most people are as happy as they make up their minds to be.

— Abraham Lincoln —

It amazes me how angry some people are.

Anger is usually brought on by control issues–issues that have not gone the way we projected them to go.

Some people develop anger as a defense mechanism due to difficult childhoods.

Regardless of the reason for a person’s anger, fixing it is an inside job…I write from experience.

When I saw the quote attributed to Lincoln I quickly thought of one of the most impactful gatherings of words that have ever been exposed to me:

And acceptance is the answer to all of my problems today. When I am disturbed, it is because I find some person, place, thing or situation–some fact of my life–unacceptable to me, and I can find no serenity until I accept that person, place, thing or situation as being exactly the way it is supposed to be at this moment. Nothing, absolutely nothing, happens in God’s world by mistake. Until I could accept my alcoholism, I could not stay sober; unless I accept life completely on life’s terms, I cannot be happy. I need to concentrate not so much on what needs to change in the world as on what needs to be changed in me and in my attitudes. (The Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous pg.417).

The words above forever changed the course of my life. Acceptance of other people, places, and things is the key to my happiness today.

Romans 12:12, “Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer.”  (ESV)
