Happiness

A man once told The Buddha, "I want happiness." The Buddha replied, "First remove 'I', that's ego. Then remove 'want', that's desire. And now all you're left with is Happiness."

— Sayings of Buddha —

There’s been some debate whether the opening quote is a Buddha quote, but regardless of whether it is or not, I really like it and agree with it.

I’ve always been under the impression chasing happiness is a waste of time because happiness is dependent upon what happens to us.  But the longer I live, the more I realize happiness is not dependent upon what happens to us as much as it is dependent upon how we respond to what happens to us.

And to take this a couple of steps further according to Buddha:

1. Happiness in my life has a chance when I’m not the center of my universe.

2. Happiness in my life has an even better chance when my wants and desires aren’t at the center of my being.

Hmm…with all of that being said, happiness is a choice.

Ecclesiastes 3:12, “I perceived that there is nothing better for them than to be joyful and to do good as long as they live;” (ESV)
