HABIT

Changing a habit is not an easy thing as habits are often deeply rooted out of beliefs we sometimes don’t realize we have.

I believe the key to personal growth is having an ongoing desire of overcoming bad habits born out of old beliefs and replacing them with fresh, productive ones.  Along with this desire must be a willingness to seek out counsel from others who will challenge our beliefs and behaviors…especially the belief that we are making progress when in fact we are so far behind, we think we are in the lead.

I can remember many years ago when I became President of our pharmacy.  I joined a peer group that served as my personal board of advisors.  In that group was a gentleman I attribute much of my business success to.  I called him the “Sage” because he was just that.  In one of our first meetings he nicknamed me “Dumb Sh##” because I was just that, as I was pretty much clueless about what it took to effectively lead an organization.

There is nothing more dangerous than a clueless leader who has surrounded him or herself with clueless enablers.

My two AA sponsors were the same way.  They took no BS from me…they loved me enough to tell me the truth.

My wife loved me enough to quit buying into my BS and instead throw me into a chemical dependency treatment center 27 years ago…and she still doesn’t buy into my BS to this day.

Who are you surrounded by?  Challengers or enablers?  People who tell you how great you are or people who are willing to call you out?

Making positive change cannot be done alone.  Seek out those who will challenge you.

Proverbs 19:20, “Listen to advice and accept instruction, that you may gain wisdom in the future.”
