Growth or Safety

In any given moment we have two options: to step forward into growth or step back into safety.

— Abraham Maslow —

I have two BHAC’s (Big Hairy Audacious Commitments) for 2020: Launch a podcast and complete a 1/2 Ironman Triathlon.

Last year at this time my BHAC’s for 2019 was to publish “Victory Over Opiates,” launch a podcast and complete another full Ironman Triathlon. Fate would allow me to only complete one of these BHAC’s as “Victory Over Opiates,” was published on August 9th. (Available on Amazon).

As some of you may recall, in May of last year all hell broke loose in our lives as I fractured my left hip due to a bicycle accident and my dad was diagnosed with incurable lung cancer. The healing of my hip was long and arduous while my dad passed to eternity five days after getting his diagnosis. During this tumultuous time in our lives, Lori’s dad was slowly losing his battle to Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy (CIDP). He would ultimately succumb to this horrible disease on November 8, 2019.

While journeying through this unplanned and challenging valley in life, the thought of throwing in the towel and coasting to my grave crossed my mind several times. Thoughts like, “You’ve done enough, back off. You are old and irrelevant. You now have a bum hip, you will never be able to run again. What if you wreck your bicycle and crush your hip again?”

In essence, my brain was calling me to the “safety” Maslow’s quote refers to.

My heart was telling me that these narratives were simply BS the devil was feeding me in order to get me to quit striving to fulfill my God-Purpose of “Inspiring others to live in the light.”

The name of my podcast is “Purpose Wins.” It is a few months from being launched and will be focused on what it takes to find and live your God-Purpose.

Last week I spent eight hours training for my 1/2 Ironman which will take place on July 26th. BTW…by training for Triathlons I nourish my body, mind, and spirit which in turn gives me the energy I need to fulfill my God-Purpose.

Following Jesus is not about safety–it’s about growing our gifts in order to positively impact His world.

Is your focus on growth or safety?

1 Corinthians 9:26, “So I run straight to the goal with purpose in every step.”

A – (Attitude) If you think you can achieve your dream, you will. Your ATTITUDE always determines your altitude in life.

C – (Community) Nothing great in life happens by doing it alone. The chances of realizing your dream expand as your COMMUNITY of positive mentors and peers expand.
