Great ain’t Average

I am only an average man but, by George, I work harder at it than the average man.

— Theodore Roosevelt —

I can remember a friend years ago telling me he needed to learn how to be average. I asked him why and he said he was a perfectionist and his drive for perfectionism was literally driving him nuts.

I’m not certain where you are on a scale of Bad-Average-Good-Great, but I am always striving for Great. The difference between me and my friend (hoping he has changed his thinking by now) is I know perfection is never attainable and Great is a moving target which always requires me to stretch and grow. In essence I know I will never “arrive.”

Something else I know is average either makes me the bottom of the top or the top of the bottom…neither are places I desire to be.

Are you OK with average or are you focused on working harder than the average man?
