Reflection
Last month I had cataract surgery on both eyes. After they prepped me for the first procedure, I was told it would be about fifteen minutes. But fifteen turned into thirty… then forty-five… then an hour.
I could sense that the person ahead of me was having complications, and the longer I waited, the more uncomfortable I became. I was hungry, tired, and fighting the urge to be impatient.
So I started doing the only thing I could control: I counted my blessings. I prayed for the person ahead of me. I thanked God for skilled doctors, modern medicine, restored vision, and the simple gift of sight. And every time frustration rose up, gratitude pushed it back down.
Gratitude shifts our focus from what’s not happening to the One who holds everything together. Thankfulness doesn’t change the situation — it changes us.
Soul Search:
Where am I currently waiting… and getting frustrated?
What blessings can I count in the middle of the delay?
Who can I pray for while I wait?
“Be still, and know that I am God.” — Psalm 46:10 (NIV)
