I don’t know about you, but I have a tendency of taking things for granted and/or being so immersed in life that my attitude forces me to see all that is “half empty” in the world.
A discipline I started not too long ago entails me acknowledging something I am grateful for each morning while I am journaling during my devotion time. I force myself to be specific in this gratitude acknowledgment exercise. The more specific I am, the more terrific my attitude of gratitude becomes. For example, I am grateful for my health. But beyond that, I note why I am grateful for my health. Spoken differently, what does a healthy body, mind, and spirit mean for my life?
Along with noting what I am grateful for I acknowledge any burdens I am carrying and immediately hand them over to God. I have found that my need to control gets in my way of being grateful–carrying burdens is a control issue. I have found that turning things over to God that are out of my control creates a pathway to peace and when my heart is at peace the lenses of my eyes seem to direct my attention to the beauty that surrounds me.
What things are you taking for granted?
Try writing them down…be specific…and thanking God for them.
If you find yourself struggling with being able to see what you have to be grateful for, try turning your burdens over to God–it helps…I write from experience.
Psalm 118:24, “This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.”Â
