Live Happy With Less

The essence of philosophy is that a man should so live that his happiness shall depend as little as possible on external things.

— Epictetus —

Reflection

I remember coaching someone a couple of years ago, and he shared that he was frustrated with the amount of joy and happiness his job was stealing from him.

When I asked him if he had looked at changing careers, he informed me that he couldn’t afford to change jobs because he felt it would be difficult to find someone who would pay him what he was getting paid. He followed that by telling me that he needed his current pay to support his lifestyle.

He essentially told me he had allowed his lifestyle to rob him of his happiness.

Or, as Epictetus’ quote reminds us…may our happiness depend as little as possible on external things.

Be careful.

Romans 8:5-6, “For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace.”
